Exercise Motivation – 5 TIPS To Stay Motivated

One of the toughest things to do when you first begin your fitness journey is staying consistent. Sometimes life gets the best of us, and when it does, the first thing we tend to do is slack on our diet and exercise. We view it as a luxury instead of a necessity. If you don’t possess a strong mindset, then chances are you need some form of exercise motivation to help you push forward and stay consistent when life gets hectic. Here are a few tips to help you during those times.

TIP #1 – Get A Workout Partner

Having a workout partner or someone who holds you accountable is extremely important if you lack the disciple to stay on course. We often lose focus and quit on our fitness journey because there are no repercussions if we stop. Having someone by your side to help you on your journey is a great way to stay focused.

An alternative way to hold yourself accountable is to make a friendly wager with a friend or family member. If you stop workout out or cheat on your diet, then you have to pay them a predetermined amount of money. Agree on a substantial amount that will cause you pain to lose. No one wants to give away free money so this will help you stay on track.

Now you have some type of negative repercussions for your actions to hold yourself accountable. You simply can’t quit because you “just don’t feel like exercising.” The pain of losing money exceeds the pain of keep exercising so this will help you to stay consistent.

TIP #2 – Use Social Media

Social media can be a great tool to use to keep you motivated if you use it for that purpose. Instagram is my platform of choice because it consists mainly of photos. To help you stay motivated, follow more people in the fitness industry so that you see more fitness posts than posts from your fiends and family.

Doing this will keep you focused on the goal at hand. If you already follow a lot of people, then you should create a 2nd page to where you only follow those fitness pages. Spend more time viewing posts on that 2nd account than you do on your first one until you get the motivation that you need to stay consistent. We live in a visual world and are inspired to do things in which we see. Spending more time on your main page may redirect your focus onto less important things.

If you are new to the fitness world on Instagram and unsure who you should follow, you can type “#fitness” into the search bar and choose from the many pages that populate using that hashtag.

TIP #3 – Hang Posters

Hanging posters or photos in variously places around your home could serve as another visual aid to keep you motivated when you aren’t scrolling through social media. This could be used in addition to social media or as a standalone visual aid for those who don’t use social media.

Having these visual aids posted in every room in your house, on your front door, in your office space and even on your screen saver will serve you well to motivate you when you begin to slack.

TIP #4 – YouTube

YouTube is another tool that you can use to keep you motivated during your workouts. Go to your favorite YouTube channel and have it playing while you workout at home. Either you can watch someone else workout to give you that extra push, or you can follow along and mimic their workout routine.

Having YouTube playing while you workout will keep you from quitting your routine prematurely. It helps me push out a few extra reps when my mind is screaming at me to stop. There’s a clear difference in the intensity I put into my workouts when I’m working out on my own versus having a fitness video playing. Give this a try and see for yourself. It should help you tremendously.

TIP #5 – Workout Videos

If you prefer watching traditional workout videos over YouTube, then I highly recommend P90x or Insanity.

P90X is an intense home DVD exercise program that can give you a lean ripped body in 90 days. The workouts are 1-1:30 hours, 6-7 days a week, and consists of weight training, calisthenics, yoga, stretching, plyometrics and ab training. The exercises are in circuit training format where you move from one exercise to the next with little to no rest in-between. This helps to keep the heart rate up so that you burn fat resulting in a more lean body.

Insanity is an advanced exercise program that consists of body weight exercises and high-intensity training. No equipment required. The workouts are performed 20 to 60 minutes at a time, 6 days a week, for 60 days. This program focuses on muscle groups such as abs, arms, shoulders, chest, legs, and glutes. The goal is Insanity is to help you lose weight and build muscle through interval training.

If you are interested in any of these programs, first consult with your doctor to determine if this intensity of fitness is safe for you.

Consistency Is Key

Consistency is key when trying to reach your fitness goals. Achieving the body that you want is a slow and steady process. Most quit prematurely because the results they desire don’t come fast enough or life stressors gets the best of them. Use one or more of the tips listed about to help you see things through.

You can count on life getting tough at some point during your training. It’s better to be prepared to weather the storm when that time comes than to be caught off guard and get swept away. The only difference between those who reach their goals and those who don’t are the ones that reach them continue to stay consistent no matter what comes their way. We all deal with struggle at some point or another. Keep pushing forward no matter what! Good luck on your journey!

For me, Instagram is more of a “I don’t think I could ever be like that” and that mindset just stresses me out. My workout routines usually involved some really upbeat songs and some workout videos from Jillian Michaels who has been an inspiration for me since I started working out. I have a lot of her videos and DVDs so whenever I feel like working out I just dig into her routines and I’m ready to go. Works like magic!

I really think you have a great article here. You provide some wonderful tips.

When I work out, I usually do it with music. I don’t like workout video’s at all because they always make everything look so easy when others may not think so.

I do exercises I know I can do on my own and because I love music, I work out with it. It keeps me motivated.

    All the best to you!

    Hello! great article

I think what would help me out most is having a workout partner. It’s like you said, you could have another person with you to hold you accountable for staying focused and on course. I’ve tried so many times to go to the gym but after about a week or two I just lose motivation. Having someone with me might help stay on track.
